Dex4u Demo3 released
I have posted the new "Dex4u" (demo3), on "Dex4u's" web site http://falconrybells.co.uk/ You can try it as a self extrating exe, or as a ISO to burn to cd-rw, or just replace the kernel32.exe on a old Dex4u floppy. New thing in demo3 include adding "more" command which prints a txt file to screen, 1 screen at a time, this code is the work of tonymac, there is lots of small things added, but most of the change's are underneath, as i have implemented a call-table, i will post how to use the call table and some of the functions tomorrow as i am too tired now  .

Want to emulate demo 3? Now you can :) http://jas2o.f2g.net/dex4u/dex4u_img.zip - 68kb - unzip to get image This image was built from almost scratch. Made bootprog bootsector, added kernel32 and programs. Keyboard works! Only problem is it starts in d:/ so use a: as your first command. Happy emulating :) Jas2o PS: It is scratch becuase I couldn't get it from the extract program or the floppy.

Thanks jas2o :) , i will post all of them , to replace the DEX one's. Just one thing, can you do a screen shot of the "more" command with the first view of the Fasm manual txt, so you get tonymac name, but also FASM in. This may attract more attention, when they see Fasm  . Thanks.

Sounds like you had a great time at camp 8), thanks for the new screenshot, looks a more interesting shot of the textviewer. All detail are right :), most of the difference in demo3, is in the functions, so people who want to program things will see the biggist difference. PS: Nice blog and thanks again for screenshots.

tonyMac- 03-22-2005

testing out all the functions as best I can, all of them look good. I'm working on a text-mode Space-invaders clone. 8) . I can run it in bochs, at night when everyone's asleep and I can't test my USB stuff. Writing the draw routines right now, I have a sprite drawig routine and a mask routine done, going to work on keyboard input tonight. Ought to demonstrate Dex4u's features well enough, shouldn't it? Albeit no graphics...

Dex- 03-22-2005

Sounds cool 8), i made a pascal text mode pong game for the first game i made, you need to turn cursor off, as nothing looks badder than a flashing cursor in a game. Buit into "Dex4u" is a games keyboard this lets you press multi key at the same time, i will add it to the call table so yo can call it from user programs.

Ready to put the screenshots up or are you waiting for something? Tonymac: Have you tried Qemu? Windows Linux Don't like command line? Try this, for windows: Qemu Manager Or for linux - Gnome: http://emeitner.f2o.org/projects/qemu-launcher/ KDE: http://kqemu.sourceforge.net/ May QEmu be with you :) Jas2o

tonyMac- 03-23-2005

truth be told, I have never tried QEMU. I found Bochs, which seemed easier to use at the time (I was writing DOS progs on my winXP machine, which didn't always work so well) I don't have the bandwidth now to download QEMU, I will give it a look. Having grown up on DOS, and moving to linux, I'm no stranger to command line. mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /winxp -o uid=tonyMac 8) whoami tonyMac  I have the draw functions done, I can move the ship back and forth on the screen, if I use a routine to do it without user intervention, it goes so fast you can't see it. :) I'm working on how I'm going to handle the laser beams, so that I can sense collisions, update them all, etc. Because of the high resolution of DEX (relatively for text mode), it looks pretty good.

Dex- 03-23-2005

The text in textmode in"Dex4u" is the same size as the text in 640x480 32bpp vesa mode, if i used the same fonts . Now we do not use the logo in the fonts you could change the old logo fonts, to space inv ships etc 8).
