FAT filesystem patents Patents on FAT filesystems upheld
In the USA at least, the FAT filesystem is now the latest victim of software patents :( I hope that further legal action will ensue and once again free these simple file systems!

It can only patent, add on things like LFN and maybe fat32, as the rest is too old and even then, only if you make money out of it.

Mostly true. The patents so far cover VFAT and LFN, but I wouldn't be suprised if they eventually got a patent on plain old FAT12 and FAT16 as well.

Not true in the USA; even distributing a VFAT driver is violating the patent and they can sue if they desired to. It's kind of annoying that a set of tables can be patented IMO.

I think the best bet is to come up with a simple FS and have the ability to use both, just in case :( .
PS: What was the CP/M FS like ?.

It should be easy to find, I was looking into it when I was trying to build a Z80 computer from scratch.... I'll take a look and send you anything I find.
I got a link to a program that will access CP/M disks from a PC,

Thanks, But we should be OK, if we stick with 8.3 file names.

Alright, but if you ever do need to switch it, the CP/M system is explained all over the place, just google it.
