operating system
Hi, I want to know if your OS will work on a computer with just hardware,,,meaning,,,,will it erase the OS and be the only installed system on my computer? If yes,,can I do most anything with it,,,surfing, email, music,, and so on? thanks Trailboss

I don't think Dex4u can install on a hard drive. It won't use the internet (at it's stage), so that also rules out email. The only music that works is cd in the GUI. Jas2o

No it will not touch you OS that is on your PC, you can test it from floppy, cd etc. But once the boot media is taken out ( eg: floppy,cd) it will boot to your normal OS. As for your other ?, we are working hard to get it to the stage where you will be able to do them things.

good to hear it's being worked on. I want something other than Windows. I just can't believe the is still no real OS to compete againest Windows. I'm just looking for a users friendly OS. thanks Trailboss

What about linux? "I'm just looking for a users friendly OS." Ok, linux might not be. But I myself would probably always stay with windows. Jas2o

I'm just thinking... You could have a look at these linux: http://www.xandros.com/ http://www.linspire.com/ I don't really know what it is like. Jas2o

thanks for the links. I was thinking on linspire if I had to go with linux,,,I do have a copy of ubuntu but can't seem to get my modem working. Anyway,,,oce I find a good OS I will never use windows. I found what I think is a good New OS but they kinda got a snag right now but they are making it to run windows apps and the owner of it made the wine program check it out!!! http://www.reactos.org/xhtml/en/index.html

I'm guessing a winmodem? I can get my winmodem to work automaticly in: SuSe (I've heard) Lycoris I can install it myself for ubuntu. I can't get knoppix to use it :( Winmodems are annoying :( Jas2o

You do have a winmodem right? http://www.linspireguide.com/winmodems http://www.linspire.com/linspire_hardware_compatibility.php?category_id=18 Jas2o

This is a good floppy based OS, called QNX. http://web.archive.org/web/20011106140711/www.qnx.com/demodisk/how.html http://toastytech.com/guis/qnxdemo.html

It probably doesn't have support for 'winmodems'. But if you can get it working, maybe you don't have a winmodem? Jas2o

Definetely go Ubuntu Linux. It's too easy to install and you can get free cd's of it via the mail.

I'll agree with that, and it supports a huge array of hardware, including som unexpected devices (it got my screen resolution correct, the only *ix to do so at 1280x800)

I have Ubuntu but I can't get it to work with my modem either and I got a external zoom modem and still no luck, Thats a big downfall using linux. Trailboss

what sort of external modem? If it were a USB, what went wrong was it was a "Serial device" to the driver, and behind the serial port sat yet another winmodem. Winmodems are purely software devices, hence the difficulty. There is almost no hardware in existence, other than the actual digital to phone converter circuitry. The USART is a device driver. Brilliant idea by the proprietary masters. M$
