Test PC's
If anyone wants to get a tesbed PC on the cheap, look here: http://www.retrobox.com/ They have PC's for as little as $30 (US) And we're talking a Pentium 2 XEON box, not a 486.

Any one into OS dev, should stockup on bargin PC like those, Thats what i do in the UK.

Most cheap ones are Dell. The laptops start at around $90-100. But you don't want heaps of the same. Jas2o

running a lean version of Linux like Slax or DSL, any of those machines can be a great extra computer, web terminal, experiment PC, you name it. And the price can't be beat, unless you get them for free from friends....

I always wanted to get a few extra pc's and run them clustered. Then I could boast I have more FLOPs than you :p

jas2o- 01-23-2006

Hmm... Yes I could do with a few more PCs. I ripped up my dad's old one (it didn't work anyway) and stuck the good things of that (floppy, cdrom were the only good things) and put them in our first whitebox to make WHITEBOX V2. Hmm... what to do with the case....? Jas2o

solidus117- 01-23-2006

As with anything you don't want: burn, baby burn!

jas2o- 01-23-2006

I'm going to have to open up WHITEBOX2 and trying and make it so the grahics card doesn't fall out. That stops me form using it. Jas2o

Krazy Glue. Clusters are really cool, and actually... We should implement a protocol for that in Dex4u, along the lines of the DOS version, at least until we get Ethernet drivers... (The DOS Beauwulf Cluster program uses the Parallel port, a fun and easy hobby cluster). A 100% asm cluster... That's almost too much to much for the mind to grasp... http://dosbeowulf.tripod.com

I keep seeing that website. We don't have any crazy glue... hmmm...I think the mb is out-of-place. Jas2o

That would be so cool 8), to build a Dex4u Super computer. People will say, but what do you want a super computer for ??. Answer, it just sounds so cool, to have your own supercomputer  .

tonyMac- 01-24-2006

Yeah, having a supercomputer would be way too cool. To help you out with that, you may want to check this out: http://www.clearspeed.com/accelerate.html These boards are amazing. I'm looking into seeing if my school will give our robotics club the funding to buy one. 8)

Cool i will study the info when i have more time.

Quick overview: 25 GFLOPS at 250 MHz. A multi-threaded array processor. I was going to build something like this on the board level, hooking a bunch of 8 bit CPU's together with a single more powerful master cpu. this is pretty cool. The Add-in board for PC is 2 of them, achieves 50 GFLOPS (A high end PC is approx 5 GLFOPS)

Dragon_Hilord- 01-24-2006

hehehe. This is funny. If you want, you could try what this university guy did. He hooked a bunch of PS2s together running Linux-for-PS2. It's a treat to watch. You could try using it to calculate Pi to some long-off value :D. I know of a few formulas that yield a good result. They're really simple too. Another thing of interest would to just make a REALLY GOOD server :D. Cheers, DH. ps. When you start talking about writing super-computer code in pure Assembly, don't you think a _little_ C/C++ would make life just a _bit_ easier? Honnestly
