Interesting! I saw the other posting about MenuetOS and it seems weird that Ville would discontinue working on it...but it had been a long time since there was anything being worked on a 32 bit version anyhow. I think there was a group of folks from Russia that were working somethings but I haven't look into it further...

@Smiddy:
You mean Kolibri? Yeah, they've been working hard at a distro.
At least new forums are up @ meos32.7.forumer.com
Maybe this'll mean some invigoration of new blood? Or just the death throws of another obsolescent operating system?
Sol.

The last time I had look was about October time frame and there was a group of folks from Russia (they called themselves something liek the Russian Guys, if I recall right) who were working on several items, like CPUID etcetera. I don't recall Kolibri as their name, but perhaps it is the one and the same folks. They seemed to do really good coding...however most things they produced didn't give the source code(?!). I did see the new forum and have looked at it briefly. It seems sparce at the moment. Perhaps it will gain speed once they put out a new version.
I was personally considering rewriting it for myself too. When I initially got into re-coding again (I had once done ASM programming in the early 90's) I found the MenuetOS to be a great source of inspiration. The startup design did bother me a bit, and I had redone some code for MenuetOS to do a better job of startup but my code was never incorperated into the build (no explanation either, weird). But undertaking a system like MenuetOS by yourself is a lot of work, so I opted not to... I'll keep my eyes on the new page however to see how it develops in the coming months.

The Russian coders were doing a good job on a lot of things, most of the later code that was assed to Menuet, including a lot of filesystem code, came from them.

I am thinking that we as in "Dex4u" may take on the role of MenuetOS, i think that we have the right talent here, to take Menuet forward.
I think the way we can do this, is to keep the CLI single tasking, but develop a multi-tasking GUI  .
That if Dex4u members want it ?.

Interesting, very interesting...I'm away this weekend so it will give me some time to ponder this a bit. I will have a few notes put together on the Tetris game too and hopefully have something to share by the time I get into my new house...does time seem to go by slower the more you REALLY want something?

I believe that's a good idea, especially if we can get some more active programmers to work specifically on that part...

I am thinking along the lines of basing the Gui on a ASM ver of this OS http://toastytech.com/guis/qnxdemo.html
Maybe only using upto 800x600 256 as standard, with built in module interface for graphic card drivers etc.
The screenshots do not do that OS Justis, so if you get time try the demo, at the above res.
Ps: if you can not find a copy let me know and i will post one.

I have been thinking of doing some work on MenuetOS aswell. It's not very realistic for me right now, with my lack of time, but... :(
How would you seperate the projects? Would you keep the diffrent names, or run Menuet as a GUI on top of dex4u ?
Dex- 03-11-2006
One thing that as come clear over at the new menuet forum, is that the name has got to be changed, here's why i think it need changing.
A name change is a must and the reason is this, the person who started menuet OS went open source, but this he thinks was a mistake, as he thinks that he can make some money out of this OS, but he can not make any money if it open source, so when 64bit came along, he saw this as a chance to re-code menuet and keep it closed source.
But its no good there being a open and closed source OS both called menuet.
So he basically wants the name back.
So if you keep the name you will find, more problems down the line.
I can think of know other reason, to close the 32bit part of the forum, Menuet64 is just Menuet32 re coded in 64 ASM, we all has coders know how long it would take to code a new OS, with a new 64 asm to learn.
The idea that i am thinking about would work like this:
1. We would change Dex4u int 40h number for some other number.
2. We would keep Dex4u CLI as it is now.
3. Build a multitasking, GUI based, ASM OS to be loaded at 8MB.
4. This OS would be based on the how Menuet worked, but re coded.
5. We would use int 40h, so old menuet programs, can be run or 90% of them.
6. This project would be run as a "Dex4u project", we would encourage people to go in differant direction and if other projects work out better that great menuet will have been saved, but if not people can join the Dex4u project.
As for name, we would vote, but maybe something like "Menuet4u" .

haha, how about "Dextop4u"?
Dex- 03-11-2006
Very good .
