thats what i found that it did not work in pure dos, and that it uses windows virtual com port so you will need to go in to bios and you should be able to set it there .
I carnt do this as i can not get into my bios, once i can find a com port that works in dos which is the same as dex4u i wil easaly be able to make a programme that works on dex4u that we can recorde and play back ir signels so we can control anything  .
what is this compaq bios programm that you were going on about , that works from windows???

I can only enable and disable it. The bios for COMPAQ is pretty crappy.
This works for mine (check the bottom of the page to see if your model is supported):
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Armada/us/download/17530.html
If not try looking to see if it is in you laptop's drivers: http://www.hp.com/country/us/en/support.htm
can't you just press F10 at the COMPAQ logo? Or just press it continuously as soon as you turn it on. That *may* work.
I'm guessing with stupid bios the only way to get it working to virtual :( I guess that is hard to code :(

there is a problem with compaq bios if you do a goggle for f10 does not work on a compaq you will see why,
can you get the programme running in dos if you enable ir in the bios and have you tryed all the ports??,
jas2o- 12-20-2005
I can't get it to work in DOS on all ports (when Infrared is enabled).

Eppp... I've chosen not to touch a soldering iron once the MIC fell of my 'test furby'.
It will never be the same again :(
I still have my normal (and will remain normal).

@Jas2o
You should practice soldering on something less complex, maybe a small kit like an LED blinker. Once the solder has melted, you can tell if it is adhearing to the surfaces or not, sometimes you have to hold it on there a little longer than you might feel comfortable with. In my experience, it's fairly difficult to burn a chip with an iron, especially the handheld pencil types. once you get the hang of it, it's ver rewarding.
@Dex4u:
When you get that working, post a schematic online, I'm sure others would love to see the electronics behind a com port. Hmmm... My GameBoy has an IR port...

@tonyMac, There in the long term plans for Dex4u, i hope to develop kits, to go along with the OS, hoping you will be our USA dealer .
tonyMac- 12-21-2005
haha, from a small OS project stems a multi-national conglomerate...

You never know  , as robots will be the next big thing, like PC were .

The TV did it again today.
I left my laptop's lid down, it hadn't 'done' anything for a while. Does the IR send things when it is idle?
It is ALWAYS channel 2. And when I'm in XP.

If your IR is set to on, it sends a signal ever 3 second .
jas2o- 12-31-2005
Then how come the TV doesn't turn on everytime the signal is sent? Does it need a few to do something?

While this topic is outdated...
IR devices work under a few basic principles:
<*>Modulation
<*>Codes
The modulation is how codes are sent. ie. FM, AM, etc. only with light. The codes may be something like:
10110 -- toggle power
11001 -- volume up
00101 -- channel +
etc...
You can use a laptop IR port to send these codes and such to play with your TV (why, I'll never know). First, you'll need to figure out all the modulations used on your remote, etc. then the codes.
FYI, you can get "unified remote" software for palm if you are interested/have one :D.
Cheers, DH.

Well if you are using a laptop with a ir port always facing a tv and you don't have the remote then you can send a code to it to do what ever.
Other than TV I was thinking of using it for the PS2 remote. We lost ours a few years ago but still have the reciever.
I don't plan on using a palm bur I have seen the software.
